Emilie du Chatelet – A Woman Ahead of Her Time

I first heard of Emilie du Chatelet when watching the NOVA episode Einstein’s Big Idea. It was about the visionary scientists whose discoveries enabled Einstein to piece together his theory of relativity. As I watched the program I became enchanted with this woman, who was so far ahead of her time—a female mathematician in a time when the education of females was either done in the home or in a convent, and when social standing was of utmost importance.
The purpose of this site is to give an overview of who Emilie du Chatelet was, her accomplishments in science and technology, and to discuss how her story, as a woman, has been told as compared to male technologists of her time.
